Eating healthy while eating out is a challenge.

Demanding that chefs hold the mayo, put the dressing on the side or steam the vegetables a certain way risks being labeled as high maintenance rather than health conscious. | PHOTOS

To help the public fight the battle of the bulge, earlier this year California set into action a law requiring chain restaurants to disclose calorie information directly on menus.

But many diners are fans of local mom-and-pop restaurants that are not under the same obligation if they have fewer than 19 locations.

One of those people is Calabasas resident Jason Lewis, 30, who was working long hours seven days a week for an advertising agency and eating out almost every meal.

Soon, he found his 5-foot-11-inch frame weighing in at 260 pounds.

"One day I came home to my wife and said I have to figure out something to watch myself because I don't have the time to order something with a million substitutions on a menu," Lewis said. "And it's also kind of embarrassing for a guy, like I don't want to sit down and say, `Oh, can I get the grilled chicken and can you steam the broccoli and put the sauce on the side.' It doesn't make you feel that cool."

Lewis began calculating the caloric intake of the dishes at the restaurants he frequented most and discovered two or three meals with 600
calories or less at each location.
After six months of sticking to these options, Lewis dropped 70 pounds.

His weight loss inspired him to create ThinDish - a company that partners with local restaurants to identify items on the menu that are no more than 600 calories, coining them ThinDishes and placing a ThinDish logo next to each on the menu.

Lewis chose 600 calories as the cutoff after consulting with a nutritionist and deciding that, based on a 2,000-calorie diet, if you eat three 600-calorie meals a day that leaves 200 calories for snacks, or cushion room.

Come Aug. 1, these meals will be posted on the website ThinDish.com and a smartphone app will be launched soon after.

"So the inspiration for this company was really the fact that I lost a lot of weight and I feel great and also that I still want to go out and eat," Lewis said.

"I enjoy eating out at restaurants and I want an easy tool to find things that are healthy for me," he said. "That's kind of why we created ThinDish. All you have to do when you go into a restaurant is if you see the ThinDish logo next to an item, you know instantly that it's healthy."

To start off, Lewis and his partners, Daren Gress and Neil Uchitel, are working with restaurants in the Los Angeles area, from Ventura to the South Bay. They plan on expanding to San Diego and other locations soon.

So far, 18 restaurants are participating including , Ai Rudy's International Cuisine in Hawthorne, Paradise Piano Bar & Restaurant in Long Beach, and Night Toast Cafe in downtown Los Angeles. Another 10 to 15 are in the process of joining.

Lewis and his partners go into each restaurant with an iPad in hand to meet the chefs and owners and introduce them to the nutritional analyzer they can access on the ThinDish website.

For each meal, the individual ingredients are entered into the analyzer to compute an overall nutritional label.

"The way that our analyzer works, it also shows the calories, fat and carbs for each individual ingredient, so it's really a creation tool for the restaurant," Lewis said. "They can play around and see what's adding to the dish and what's not adding to the dish."

Some restaurants modify dishes by substituting ingredients or altering portion sizes to make it a ThinDish.

The full nutritional information will not be made available on the restaurant menus. Even on the website and app, users will have to click on a link to see the full nutritional facts for a specific dish.

"Unlike most sites that have nutrition information available, we don't show the nutrition information immediately since we don't want people to get caught up in the numbers and miss the most important part: the food," said Uchitel, ThinDish's chief operations officer and acting chief technical officer.

"A ThinDish is 600 calories or less. That's all anyone needs to know."

The free phone app is a geo-located system that will use the phone's GPS to identify restaurants nearby that have ThinDishes available.

Uchitel set it up so users can refine their search to include many dietary restrictions including gluten-free, organic, vegan and kosher.

Once a location has been chosen, only available ThinDishes will be listed, so as to not tempt would-be diners with unhealthy meals.

"It's hard for me to order the chicken when it's next to the lasagna," Lewis said. "So that's the other thing that this kind of does: People can open up the iPhone app and they only see the dishes that are under 600 calories, so they don't feel tempted to order anything else. They don't have to open the menu if they don't want."

And the ThinDishes identified are not just chicken, vegetables and salads. There is a variety, says Lewis, including sushi, Mexican food and steak. Soon Indian food will be added to the growing list.

Lewis and Chick's Restaurant in Woodland Hills Uchitel say they hope restaurants use the calorie analyzer to create even tastier meals.

But you won't have to just trust what they think is a delicious, yet healthy, meal. Reviews will be available online and on the phone app.

"The main reason I created this company, honestly, is to help people. I've worked in advertising before and I had a great job and this, to me, is more of a passion than it is a business," Lewis said.

"I have dealt with eating unhealthy my entire life and I feel a million times better and I really want to share this experience with everybody."

Stephanie Cary 310-540-5511, Ext. 6630

EDITOR'S NOTE: Living a healthier lifestyle is a truly global ambition. With that in mind, meet Dr. Racha Sankar. She operates a bariatric center in Damascus, Syria but earned her degree in diet and nutrition at Florida International University. Our worldly friend is here with a blog about fiber.

At my clinic, the most common complaint I hear is: Help! I simply cannot lose weight anymore!

My first question: Are you constipated?

The usual response: Yes... and I am always feeling bloated after each meal!

From my practice, I realized that we choose foods more wisely when we are dieting but we tend to forget the most important nutrient in our foods. We fail to consider the amount of fiber we consume.

And we end up with constipation, a slower metabolic rate, bloating... and giving up on dieting. The sad result is that we regain any weight that we managed to lose.

FACT: The more fiber we consume each day the more satisfying the results we experience.

The human body lacks a fiber-digesting enzyme, so the fiber we eat gets into and out of our bodies without being digested. It means fiber does not provide us with calories.

However, fiber does not work without water. I've found that the average human body needs 29 gram of fiber and 8-10 cups of water a day.

FACT: Fiber does magical actions with water!
The Roles Fiber Play in the Human Body
When you eat fiber-rich food and drink a cup of water right after it, fiber mass gets into your stomach. There water gets it puffy. So, this puffy fiber mass occupies a larger space of your stomach, letting you get full faster.

The digestion process begins. You drink a cup of water which pushes the puffy fiber mass down further. This puffy fiber mass absorbs more water to arrive to your small intestine even puffier.

In the small intestine, most of nutrients are digested and absorbed, but with fiber the digestion and absorption will be delayed starting with sugar first and then fat. Fiber will not let sugar fly into your bloodstream as fast as it used to do. Therefore, you will not experience the sudden sugar high after meals.

Fiber also partially binds to bile salts, the fat emulsifier. This results in partially indigested fat.

According to some studies, fiber will also partially stop the cholesterol synthesis in our bodies.

So now you drink water and the puffier fiber mass arrives to your colon. It's big and puffy -- and scraping along the walls of your colon. When the huge fiber mass moves inside your colon, it grabs toxins stuck to colon walls and any materials left from the digestion process.

It then plunges all this waste material out of your body.

Studies have showen that the feces of someone who has consumed fiber-rich foods will be full of toxin, digestions materials, and partially undigested fat.
Fiber's Magical Roles in Constipation and Bloating
If you want to lose more weight, fiber will make it easier for you by relieving constipation, which is one of the main reasons people hit a diet plateau while dieting. When you are constipated your metabolic rate runs slower.

Fiber is great for flushing out your system and kick-starting your metabolism. Fiber will remove toxins in your colon and soon you do not experience bloating and discomfort after eating.
Fiber's Magical Roles in Promoting Weight Loss
First, fiber is zero calories. second, it gets puffier with water. The puffier it is, the larger space it occupies in your stomach. And the quicker you feel full.

Fiber delays digestions and allows for better absorption of nutrients. And it delays your feelings of hunger.
How to Get Your 29 Grams of Fiber?
Each of the following provides you with between 2.5 grams and 3 grams of fiber:

Half cup of fresh juice

One serving of edible fruit skin (size of your fist or tennis ball)

A cup of fresh vegetable

Half-cup of cooked vegetables

4-5 pieces of dried fruit

2/3 cup of beans

One serving of a whole-wheat product

An ounce of mixed nuts

7 takeaway tips

Eat an apple when you wake up

Add medium tomato with 3 slices of lettuce to your breakfast

Start your lunch with 2 cups of fresh green salad containing a handful of beans

Take 6 strawberries and 3 celery stalks to work

Start your dinner with a bowl of vegetable soup and make sure you add peas when cooking it

Sprinkle 3 tablespoons of oatmeal in your salad and soup

Make an official rule at home: No refined white-flour bread

Dr. Racha Sankar is an American/Syrian pharmacist who received her degree in Dietetics & Nutrition from Florida International University. Dr. Sankar is owner of Fat2Slim Bariatric Center located in Damascus, Syria. There she works with bariatric patients and other patients with chronic diseases. Dr. Sankar developed the first food analysis software for Arabic cuisine. For further information, check out her website

Article by Gregory Justice

Hanging on by a thread searching for that best diet, fat loss, or weight loss plan? Been there and done that, yet still stuck withlittle or no results?

First, understand that you are not even close to being alone on this. Literally millions of people every year try and failto reach their weight loss goals. And it’s really not your fault. We are so bombarded by the latest and greatest mis-information ondiets, fat loss, and weight loss plans it’s no wonder mass confusion is the order of the day.

Do I cut carbs? What about calories? How much exercise do I need? Does Atkins really work? What if I just drink water? Will those pills cause problems with my heart? How about if I just sew my damn lips shut!? The list goes on and on.

And you know what? Just about any diet, fat loss, or weight loss plan will work – at least temporarily. The key is knowing how to make it stick – without massively changing your lifestyle. It has to be something that you 1.) can do, and 2.) will continue to do. Right?

Unfortunately we’ve been conditioned to believe that a harder diet = better diet. I’d propose that a better truth is more like a smarterdiet = better diet.

Ask yourself honestly, how long can you go doing the negative calorie thing with just celery and water? I certainly hope you don’t get upset with yourself when you finally “break” and start eating again.

Truth is, it was your body’s defense against a slow death by starvation that caused you to fall off that particular wagon. And what about the weight loss you enjoyed while pretending to be a rabbit for a week? It all comes back, with interest.

Look the science behind losing weight is already out there. Simply burn more calories than you consume and you will lose weight. Period.

Now comes the smarter part – once you figure out which foods to eat that aren’t packed with low quality calories, your diet can help you drop pounds faster than you can imagine. WITHOUT STARVING. Learning about how portion sizes, frequency and which specific exercises stimulate your metabolism is what I call smarter too.

Isn’t it time to get off the diet crazy train? Take a look at the most comprehensive review on the net comparing the smartest diet, fat loss, and weight loss plans that are out there so that you can see for yourself. Check it out at Best Diet Fat Loss Weight Loss Review

Cheers & Happy Dieting!-Greg

About the Author

Gregory Justice is a Health & Wellness writer with over 10 years of experience in clinical nutrition and weight loss.

Find More Weight Loss Articles

Tags: Best, Diet, loss, Plan, weight

My weight is 167 and I would like to to weigh 125 pounds.

I have tried Slim Fast once a day and twice a day with a sensible meal at night or noon.

I tried ediets their ediet plan, heart plan and also weight watchers on line. The ediet was the easiest to follow and easiest to understand.

Everything was explained and they had a dietitian and exercise guru to answer questions and help.

I could not lose an ounce on any diet. I could eat 500 calories a day and gain a pound when I weighed myself the next day. I went to Mayo Clinic and got diagnosed with Diabetes and under active thyroid.

I am on medicine for both conditions and have lost ten pounds in two months. I think anyone wanting to lose weight or that has tried to lose weight needs to check with the doctor to make sure there is not a real physical reason why they are unable to lose weight.

All of us pretty much know if we have really tried and should be losing weight. If that is the case, stop and see your doctor.

Highly recommended bodyweight exercises for women

Hey everyone!
How do you guys do it mentally? I am on VLCD 11 and have done okay, we cheated on Valentines day but went right back into the VLC the next day. I am down 9 pounds so far. I just finished TOM today and took my drops this morning after being off them for 4 days. I am using 166iu hucog and am (trying) to go for the 43 day round.

I am never hungry at all, and sometimes I have to tell myself to go eat, otherwise I wouldn't. But I can't stop thinking about the foods I can't have. I literally dreamt about it last night. I have this internal battle within myself to justify why it's okay to have some pizza. I tell myself I would just go do a heavy workout and burn those calories that night. But I know it doesn't always work that way with the fats and starches I would be consuming. Then the other side of me says, no, you wanted this, you can do it, it's only temporary. But then I hear, but it would taste so good, you don't even really need this diet, you just need to workout more like you used to, then all of this agony over pizza would go away! Then it flips back and it's like no, that's why you're doing this diet, because you don't have the time to workout like you used to.... AHHH! I feel like Gollum from Lord of the Rings. It's getting ridiculous and I don't know how much longer I can last like this. I hear it gets easier but right now it's not. I'm not even hungry, I JUST WANT A SLICE OF PIZZA SO BAD.

Taking it day by day helps, but now it's Friday and we have a 3 day weekend and I'm almost positive I'm going to give in. How do you guys do it? I've read every post in the cheating thread, I've taken all the suggestions. I break up my meals and my fruits and snack, but that's not the problem because I'm really not hungry. I just want to taste some pizza. I was never really in love with pizza before, but right now it literally sounds like the absolute best thing in the entire world.
