			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Almond trees are blooming and wildflowers are brightening up Bidwell Park, which can only mean one thing — spring is here. While I love the beauty of the season, it also comes with the reminder that it's time to jump out of my winter gloom and into healthy changes.<p>For me, March is a month of second resolutions. I'd like to say I'm healthy all year, but somewhere in the winter months my healthy habits seem to get lost. In January, I set goals of healthy meals and plan out an exercise routine, only to fall off the wagon in February. Once the winter cold sets in, I find that staying inside and watching TV while eating my favorite snacks suits me more than my New Year plans.</p><p>Since March is National Nutrition Month, this seems like the perfect time to make spring resolutions to carry out in April. It's time for a fresh start, and this time I'm carefully creating new, attainable goals to ensure I won't slip up on my healthy plans come summer. Eating healthfully is going to be a major part of this, but the other crucial part is exercise, which in my opinion is the hardest part. I'm hoping with these five tips, I can lead myself into a sustainable healthy lifestyle:</p><p>A routine workout consisting of countless days on the treadmill and a repetitive diet plan of salad and chicken just isn't going to work for me long. If I want to maintain a healthy lifestyle, I'm going to have to incorporate variety and excitement. That is why I've decided to form my own </p>healthy hobbies, whether that means joining a dance class, going on weekly hikes or becoming part of a recreation sports team. So far I have two hobbies in mind: one, Zumba and two, gardening. If you have not tried Zumba and you love to dance, then this just may be a wonderful option for you, too. This Latin-inspired dance fitness routine is the most fun I have had working out. Gardening may not seem like much of a workout, but that is far from true. I recently read that an hour of gardening can burn around 300 calories. That is comparable to going for a brisk 3 1/2-mile walk. What's even better is all the hard work pays off in the end when you get to eat the tasty fruits of your labor.<p>When I get home from work I'm usually hungry and if I don't have a plan, the temptation to eat out or whip up something quick, but not so nutritious, is overwhelming. By planning my meals and cooking enough for leftovers, I can minimize this urge and set myself up for success. This also gives me a great opportunity to prepare some of my favorite healthy recipes. Two in particular that I am most fond of are vegetable quesadillas and avocado tortilla soup (see recipes this page.)</p><p> Including fruits and vegetables in my diet is key to a successful meal plan. By eating a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables I can fuel my body with the vitamins and minerals it craves. One way I love to do this is by going to the local farmers markets and picking out fresh produce each week. Chico has some wonderful markets with plenty of seasonal produce. Try the year-round Chapman Market and Saturday Farmers Market, the most popular Thursday Night Market (opening next week), or the newly started Road Runner Community Market Place (opening April 16).</p><p> Drink plenty of water</p><p>Some days I find it hard to get the recommended six to eight glasses of water down. Water is refreshing and fuels the body like no other drink, but every now and then I just need to spice it up a bit. I've found by adding mint or cucumber to my water or even a tablespoon of 100 percent juice for a little flavor, I can minimize my cravings for sugar-filled beverages. Finding out how much sugar was in my favorite drinks right away made me not want them anymore. Just one 12-ounce can of soda contains about 10 teaspoons of sugar, plus around 150 calories. To burn off that amount of calories, I would have to go for a 45-minute walk or ride my bike for 30 minutes. When thinking about health, it's easy to overlook what you are drinking. Don't forget how important it truly is.</p><p>I could say that I'm never going to eat heavy foods again or that I will never bake my favorite sweets, but we all know that probably is not true. Also, banning these foods completely kind of makes me want them more. Rather than put food "off limits," I'm working on knowing what is a "sometimes" food and what's an "anytime" food. The important thing to think about here is portions. For example, a portion of meat it about the size of a deck of cards and a serving of cheese is the size of a pair of dice.</p><p>If I have a long day and can not get motivated to workout and cook dinner, I always remind myself of the main reasons for my healthy changes. An unhealthy lifestyle comes with the risk of serious health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and certain types of cancer. These are just not the kind of risks I want to take. Plus, eating better and exercising regularly makes me feel great. It relieves my stress, boosts my mood, and gives me more confidence, all benefits that lead to a healthier, happier me.</p><p>Making these changes is not going to be easy, but these small steps can lead to big improvements in my health. With the spring sunshine and longer days, this is the best time of year to get outside and get active or pick up some local produce and make a new recipe. There is something about the spring air that just gets me motivated, and I'm looking forward to my improved, healthier ways.</p><p>Avocado Tortilla Soup</p><p>Sprinkle red pepper flakes on this soup for added heat.</p><p>Makes 8 servings. 1 cup per serving.</p><p>Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes</p><p>3 (14-ounce) cans low-sodium chicken broth</p><p>2 (103/-ounce) cans low-sodium condensed tomato soup</p><p>1/2 bunch cilantro, leaves only</p><p>3 cloves garlic, finely chopped</p><p>1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper</p><p>1 ripe California avocado, peeled, pitted, and chopped</p><p>8 corn tortilla chips, crumbled</p><p>Nutrition information per serving: Calories 134, Carbohydrate 17 g,</p><p>dietary Fiber 2 g, Protein 5 g, Total Fat 6 g, Saturated Fat 1 g,</p><p>Trans Fat 0 g, Cholesterol 0 mg, Sodium 350 mg</p><p> In a large pan over high heat, combine chicken broth, tomato</p><p>soup, cilantro, garlic, and ground black pepper. Bring to a</p><p>boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 10 minutes.</p><p>Cool slightly, then puree small batches in a blender.</p><p>Return to pan, add avocado and heat thoroughly.</p><p> Ladle into soup bowls and garnish with crumbled tortilla</p><p>chips before serving.</p><p>Vegetable Quesadillas </p><p>Makes 4 servings. 1 tortilla per serving.</p><p>Prep time: 10 minutes</p><p>Cook time: 15 minutes</p><p>Nonstick cooking spray</p><p>1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper</p><p>1/2 cup frozen corn, thawed</p><p>1/2 cup sliced green onion</p><p>1/2 cup chopped tomato</p><p>2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro</p><p>4 (6-inch) flour tortillas</p><p>1/2 cup shredded reduced fat Cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese</p><p>Nutrition information per serving:</p><p>Calories 134, Carbohydrate 20 g, Dietary Fiber 2 g, Protein 7 g, Total Fat 3 g,</p><p>Saturated Fat 1 g, Trans Fat 0 g, Cholesterol 3 mg, Sodium 302 mg</p><p>Spray a medium skillet with nonstick cooking spray. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p> <br /><p> Good day to you web folk! Today I wanted to write about diet apps and what they are good for. Let’s recognize some facts as we get started on this post. People love their smart phones and the main reason why we all enjoy our smart phones so much is because of all the apps we can use and play with. Would you good web folk agree with that statement? I will assume that you just nodded yes so we can move one.</p><p> So obviously with the popularity of smart phones on the rise it would make sense that eventually <strong>diet tracking</strong>, <strong>calorie counting</strong>, <strong>weight loss apps</strong> would come to be. I mean after all the diet industry is bringing in billions of dollars every year so a diet app would be the next logical step, right? Of course and that is what I wanted to discuss here today.</p><p> I will start with an iPhone diet app that is free by the way and looks to do a pretty nice job of tracking your diet plans. What is cool about this app which is called <strong>My Diet Diary</strong>by the way is that all the information you enter regarding your food and exercise is that it all gets linked up with the site MedHelp.org. The reason why that is so sweet is because that means you can have access to all your diet diary information from any computer on the web. It has all the cool stuff you would expect from an app now a days, like social networking, fancy graphs and  goal settings.</p><p> I don’t want to leave all my Android friends out of the loop so I took the time to do a little research on a similar product by the name of <strong>Diet2Go</strong>. This one happens to be on the iPhone market as well so you lucky web folks get a double bonus in diet app tips today. This one’s main feature to me is the huge library of diet plans that it gives you access to. It has meal reminders, social networking features again as well as weight loss tips and estimates based on the diet plan you choose to follow.</p><p> I almost forgot, a little health care side not for those of you that have been or are planning on using a <strong>diet tracking app</strong>. Tell your doctor about it when you go for your next check up. It will make their jobs a lot easier in terms of taking care of you their patient because having a detailed history of what you are eating instead of telling your doctor that your diet is OK. Will go along way towards them prescribing a better health care plan for you which will go a long way towards saving you money on your health care in the long run. I’m just saying people that information is power so why not share that with the doctor that is taking care of you.</p><p> Anyway both of those apps that I mentioned are free which is why I mentioned them because I know that all you web folk out there like free stuff just as much as I do. Before I get on out of here though here are the links to the two diet apps that I talked about My Diet Diary and Diet2Go. Like I said they are both free so if you don’t like either one just unload it and find another one as there are plenty of them out there.
